Compositor:

Reminds me a bit of Alex North's score for a scene in "Spartacus" wherei Kirk Douglas and Woody Strode fight to the death in the arena.

Jerry Goldsmith was one of the fine composers who happened to elevate many films to musical as well as visual experiences. So glad composers like Goldsmith are still remembered today. Note how well this symphony orchestra performs the music under the baton of Andre Previn, an exceptional conductor of symphonic music!

I remember 'Previn and the Pittsburgh" with fondness. I purchased my first colour TV set so that I could watch the show. I'd forgotten about this performance. It's a beauty. Jerry would no doubt have been proud of the performance.

Thanks for posting this! I saw the original PBS show when it was broadcast in 1977. I watched it with my Dad when I was 11. We recorded the show on a portable cassette deck, and I listened to the recording of this piece countless times. It's literally been 36 years since I've seen it. Goldsmith was a master of dissonance and minor keys, and this is as good as it gets for film composition. The shame is that only a portion of the piece was used in the movie!

I love it!!! Andre Previn conducting a Jerry Goldsmith score!!! Until now, all I knew was that Andre was a close personal friend of John Williams and Elmer Bernstein but I never knew that Andre knew Jerry.

Andre may not have 'known' Jerry as you allege, but he certainly admired his music.
