Compositor:

Conflicto. Venganza de Messala Versiones Friendship Ben Hur-Rozsa. Fanfare for Circus Parade -PARADE OF THE CHARIOTEERS.
Circus Parade o Parade Of The Charioteers: Ben Hur- Rozsa 1959 .
Ben Hur-Rozsa Re-Recording Carlo Savina 1960. Ben Hur-Rozsa Re-Recording Miklos Rozsa 1977: Que es el Prelude Ben Hur-Rozsa Tema de Ben Hur; que se repite en: El Inicio Finale Ben Hur-Rozsa. El inicio The Sea Battle Sequences Part Three. The Burning Desert. Messala Revenge. Fanfare For Start Of Race. Ben Hur Crowned. Lepper Search for The Christ, Ben Hur-Rozsa. Misma Parte que Rozsa repite en su The Cid-Rozsa Prelude Tema The Cid; misma parte Rodriguo's Doubts - Death of The Cid.

The orchestra looks like everyone with an instrument is having fun with this piece! Oh boy, we get to play a great big fanfare, overture, and march (of the charioteers). Note that the actual chariot race in the (1959) movie has no music underscore--only before and after the race. The race itself needs NO underscore. Film composers back then knew when to underscore the emotion in a movie--and when to fall silent!

When I look at the so-called "leading men" of Hollywood today, compared with the leading men of years ago, I have to laugh. Just compare actors like Tom Cruise and Justin Timberlake to Charleton Heston and Humphrey Bogart. It's like comparing Superman to Pee Wee Herman.

One of the greatest movie moments of all time...
Christ rises to face a hardened Roman legionnaire, the man is instantly convicted, confused, and stunned that any unarmed man could command such respect by a look.
Turns away and then turns back for an instant, still unbelieving, confused by the power he has just witnessed.
The director, the script, the actor playing the soldier brought together a moment in movie history I will never forget!

Surely this is the overture from the start of the film, not just the prelude and 'charioteers'. In any case it's magnificent in the way epic film scores used to be. The middle of the charioteer march where the cellos, horns and trombones take the theme is really stirring.

And I thought the original MGM recording was unapproachable. Perhaps it's superior recording technology, but this is beyond outstanding. What I would have given to heard this performance live!
As for the 2016 remake, it is a good retelling of the classic story, but. . . the 1959 William Wyler movie is like a giant canvas painted by a Dutch master -- every time you examine it you see more and realize what a stunning motion picture it is.

It's a great score for any medium--including the concert hall! To see the movie in a theater equipped with the multi-channel sound system this score deserves is a fantastic experience--and I had it in 1960, when I first saw the movie in Washington, DC. I was very young, but you don't forget an experience like that. Even so, many years later, when Miklos Rozsa conducted a new recording of selections from this score, and I played it for my sister, she gasped at the first sound of the trumpets heralding the prelude (the way the music is heard in the movie). That was a wonderful experience too!
15/02/2017 cinemabon
I too saw the roadshow print and it blew me away. It was projected in Superpanavision 70 (anamorphic 70mm) known at the time as MGM Camera 65. I've never seen anything so impressive in my life (until I saw Star Wars at Graumanns)

TOP TOP EPIC SCORE FOR AN EPIC FILM ONE OF THE BEST OF ALL TIME ON BOTH FRONTS. And did you know Ben Hur still holds the record for the biggest Oscar winner of all time with 11. Titanic 1998 came closest with 10.

Responder a este comentario >>

05/08/2016 Mikesimus300
Actually, Titanic tied with 11. Return of the King also tied with them.
14/02/2017 Greg Hall
True, Titanic and ROTK each got 11 Oscars but by that tine both the Special Effects and Sound awards were split into two awards each creating two more Oscar wins. No doubt, Ben Hur would have picked up the two additional awards had they existed at the time. In addition, Ben Hur lost the Screenplay Oscar due to a nasty battle over who should be given credit. Director Wyler actually took out an add blasting the guild for not giving Christopher Fry credit. He urged people not to vote for Karl Tunberg who got sole screen credit for the Ben Hur script. Had there been no scandal Ben Hur would have won that Oscar too. In addition, Ben Hur picked up two acting awards and neither Titanic nor ROTK got any acting Oscars - receiving mostly technical awards. Allowing for "Oscar Inflation" , the nasty script scandal and the acting Oscars, Ben Hur still stands on top IMHO.

The film is a masterpiece; the music is simply unequalled, IMHO!  Miklos Rozsa was a genius. Consider : " Ben Hur " -" King Of Kings", & " El Cid", all one after the other. No one --NO ONE --in film today, could do this at that level--not Zimmer, Williams, or Silvestri. No one. -----------Wolfsky9

Total agreement. It's so sad that this kind of quasi grandiloquos scoring was lost with his generation.
John Williams used to do quite a good aproximation in the 70's and 80's, but nowadays no one writes like that. And it is a damn shame.
And the two pieces here are not even the best. The quiet ones are actually were it really shows how much better scores used to be.

I'm doing a project on we didn't start the fire for school and one of my topics was Ben Hur. I read that it was nominated for best score in the 1960s oscars and I can tell why this was amazing. I have to say though a lot of the brass players had the worst posture and I personally didn't like the way the conductor conducted. But great song anyway!

Responder a este comentario >>

19/07/2016 LJBSasha
Do you mean in THIS performance that you don't like the brass-players' posture or the conductor's conducting? [Yes, I've noticed others on this posting also panning John Wilson - what's so bad about his work?]
31/07/2016 CDB8939
All of the musicians in this Orchestra are handpicked by the  Conductor of the John Wilson Orchestra, - John Wilson. They are all the very best players, 13 of the Violin Players in this Concert are Major Orchestra Leaders, most of the rest are Principals as are most of the Woodwind/Brass /Percussion. So I think they know how to sit to play their Instruments, anyway it is up to them to feel comfortable.

+FriendofRamblinJack One of the interesting things about what you write is that Rozsa, who wrote some of the most beautiful Christian-themed music in Hollywood history, was not a Christian, but a Jew. In fact, when one looks at the history of ancient Roman times---as told through Hollywood eyes, much of the beautiful Christian music was written by great Jewish composers. Rozsa wrote "Ben-Hur" and "Quo Vadis." Alfred Newman wrote "The Robe" and three very non-Roman, but related Christian themed films, "The Egyptian" (with another Jewish composer, Bernard Herrmann), "A Man Called Peter" and "The Song of Bernadette." Franz Waxman, who was beaten on a Berlin street for being Jewish, escaped from Naziism to write the scores for "The Silver Chalice" and the beautiful"The Nun's Story." I don't know if these men were particularly observant in the Jewish faith, but they were forgiving in their professionalism, considering the way Christians have often treated Jewish people.
06/07/2017 Nance Schmance
Mr. Snyder, I just now saw your comment here. I am a child of the mid 50s, sir, so I am very aware of classics in all forms, Hollywood, composers, etc. I've seen many times all the pictures you stated, my favourite being Ben Hur. Having said that, one could also reply, in regards to your last statement, that Christian American Military Armed Forces could still harbor a grudge against the Israeli people and government for the deliberate attack causing the death of many sailors aboard the USS LIBERTY. HOWEVER, being a follower of Jesus Christ and a devout born-again Bible-adherent Christian, we love Israel and we stand with Israel as God Almighty YHWH commanded us, we forgive and we ask forgiveness. Having said all that, I was just telling my husband last night watching THE ROBE again for the umpeenth time, "Honey, look at how much beautiful music ever composed came from our Jewish brothers and sisters!" God bless you, Mr. Snyder. -- US COAST GUARD MOM, aka Friend of Ramblin Jack Elliott

Keep in mind that you're comparing the best music of that era to basically all music now. You've probably heard a lot more film scores from the early 2010s, and only the 'classics' from, say, the late 1950s. That's always going to create a bias in favour of the earlier era.

Excellent performance, though pale in comparison to Miklos Rozsa conduting the Pitisburgh Symphony Orchestra, (which is awesome) or even Andre Rieu with the Johann Strauss Orchestra (which is spectacular) both of which are on Youtube here.. Let down by the poor recording, sound so muted, distant & muddled, or at least what's uploaded here. The music sound cold & clinical not conveying the powerful human emotion associated with them.

This conductor is obviously weak. Music dominates him, but he does not dominate the music. He never takes his eyes from the paper. He does awkward gestures all time as if he had a nervous problem. But the orchestra is so excellent that compensates by far those problems. The old and original version Miklos Rozsa conducting is MUCH BETTER!

I didn't reply because I am not getting into an argument. You obviously don't know anything about John Wilson or the hand picked Orchestra which for you information In this concert had 13 Concertmasters playing in the Violins section. If you don't like his conducting style then so be it, The Orchestras he conducts are fine with his conducting as are the audiences who flock to see him, so that is all that matters. You obviously have a thing about Simon Rattle as well to make all these un-necessary derogatory comments about them. If you don't like what they do I suggest you stop watching them or turn it off
02/06/2017 Renee Ralston
I disagree, Joe. I actually like this version better than the Rosza one. It has more energy and power.

MAGNIFICENT: observe the face of the Roman when Christ gives Ben Hur water on his way to the galleys. The Roman tries to object but HE CANNOT .
17/06/2017 Kirsten I. Russell
The expression on the Roman's face is one of the great moments in the film. You never see the face of the actor playing Christ, but you see how the sight of Christ's face affects different characters in the film--from Judah Ben-Hur to a Roman soldier who looks like a thug, but the expression on his face says there's more to him than cruelty. I believe something in him seldom if ever reached before is reached in that moment.
09/08/2017 dennis biernat
Yes, you can see the dried gourd Jesus held up with water to Ben Hur.
27/08/2017 Shakey Kumar
Kirsten I. Russell I saw the new Ben Hur with some mates at the cinema and then showed them this Charlton Heston version at home on Bluray with full on surround sound in my home theatre in full (4 hours or so) and it blew them away especially the chariot race and Massala's death scene. Still as amazing as when I first saw it on a re run in the early 70's at the cinema with my dad when I was only 6 or 7 years old - it has stayed with me ever since. Not something I can say about a lot of films these days, still a movie buff though.

it was very clever of Wyler to do this--great film memory!  and of course the romance on one side adds resonance to what happens later in film and a possible reason why of jealousy, etc. (and trying to destroy the thing one loves)
10/06/2017 everett403
Total fabrication from Gore Vidal, Heston said Wyler never filmed it with that intention and the screen writer Christopher Fry re wrote ALL the dialogue on the film NOT Vidal And Fry too said that was just a story from Vidal with NO substance to back it.
16/09/2017 Kamrul Hassan
yes, Ben Hur is undoubtedly number 1 !

+Halit Cimen Ignorance??? from a muslim??? LOL !!!
28/09/2014 Johannes Ekman
Of what I gather, Muslims are not even agreeing whether music should be permitted or prohibited. Quranic verses such as "So abstain from the pollution of the idols and abstain from false vain words." (22:30) seems to lean toward the latter, if, as one imam claims, "vain words" means music (http://www.al-islam.org/music-and-its-effects-a-h-sheriff/quran-music). And, I have not heard about music coming from the Arabic part of the world (not sofisticated music like this anyway). There is probably no (or at least they are very few) Muslim orchestra. Anyway, since I am not a Muslim (I am namely Christian) and I have not researched this a lot, this comment cannot be much more than a suggestion.

The Rieu version is exactly that. his version, spectacular and loud, The Ben Hur played by the John Wilson Orchestra is the original film version, the Orchestra contains many of the Worlds finest musicians and the playing is as good if not better than the original film recording, and certainly better that Rieu's monster version.
07/08/2014 mikjon67
Andre Rieu does The Parade Of The Charioteers. This is the beginning of the motion picture!
18/07/2014 WMJCPA
This is an amazing piece of music, yes an epic in and of itself.  This is probably the finest performance of this music I have heard outside of the original soundtrack.  I acquired this film in a 50th anniversary set on Blu-Ray, and it is truly amazing still after all these years,.  Then considering that it was a man from Indiana General Lew Wallace that wrote the story in the 1800's.  I have read that Wallace, once an atheist had a transformation in faith just from the writing of the story.  Amazing story.

I hesitate to use superlatives (best, greatest, etc.) when describing music or composers. Music is so subjective that I can only note what I like and what I don't like. Having said that, Miklos Rosza's score for Ben-Hur “hooked” me when I first saw the movie as a child in 1959, and has  been one of my favorites ever since.   I can't imagine this movie without this score. His musical talent shines through in his other film scores as well. In addition to biblical and costume dramas (Ivanhoe, El Cid, King of Kings), he scored science fiction (Time after Time), spy thrillers (Eye of the Needle) and comedy (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid). Truly a stellar musical talent.

Leslie T - agreed . There are many awesome scores and although I'm not saying this is THE best ever, in my opinion, it has never been surpassed for quality, scale, the fit to the film or the emotional power it contains - in the true sense, I believe it to be "INSPIRED".
21/10/2017 tiffsaver
+1davidpeter
Just out of curiosity, what are some scores that you think are "the best"?
21/10/2017 1davidpeter
well tiffsaver i think a lot of them are mentioned by others already in this thread, and it's all just personal opinion as to what a film score really needs to be and taste in musical styles - so nothing authorative or dictatorial from me - more ones that I like best or have found most moving/stirring. For me that means scores that are pretty dominant in the picture, not just a quietly supporting a drama. But since yr asking, and off the top of me head - how about: Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, El Cid, The Godfather, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, ET, Jaws, Close Encounters, Superman, The Battle of Britain, Where Eagles Dare, How The West Was Won, The Magnificent Seven, The Towering Inferno, Gladiator, Star Trek/J Goldsmith, Live and Let Die, The Lion King, Raiders, Last Crusade, The G/B/Ugly, and then there are the big musicals from Carousel to My Fair Lady? All this music has the power to move and grip and entertain the audience, and in my opinion, all those scores are great in their own way. I couldn't pick THE best out of this lot, but tied with the film itself, the music from Ben Hur is as stirring, moving and heart rending as any - even as moving as certain parts of Return of The Jedi, which are sufficiently deep, moving and full of pathos that we even used them at our son's funeral. All the best,
21/10/2017 tiffsaver
