Well executed, but the tempo is a tad slow. Listen to the original by Bernard Herrmann on this same site, and you'll hear it right off. This minor lack of speed made the entire piece lack the critical urgency of the original.

From a layman's point of view...this is simply mesmerizing watching the multitude of very talented musicians play this historic score.
90% of us listening to this score while watching the film never really grasp the amount of people that are contributing to the final musical moments we see on screen.
I was shocked to see how many string instruments went into the "screeching" shower scene.
I've a new appreciation for soundtracks now.
And, BTW, great camera direction here so that we saw all these moving parts of the orchestra working together.

If you watch and listen very closely you'll hear something unique. Going back to the original score, Hermman instructed the orchestra to eschew vibrato. As you closely, you'll see the BBC players using it in moments but it's very subtle, almost imperceptible to the ear, which makes me think it was a conscious choice, just as they slowed the tempo in some sections, and merged other aspects of the score.

A purist may find this to be annoying, but I didn't find it to be.

Responder a este comentario >>

16/12/2017 Quazgaa Seeso
Yes I notice that vibrato too, that I heard Herrmann didn't want. But at 2:14 they are too fast, being used to the Herrmann conducted version. What is so amazing about this score is, I consider it one of greatest film scores ever, but what is it for? A joke of a movie by Hitchcock who wanted to see if he could out-do those schlocky William Castle/Roger Corman films that were then in vogue. In other words, the score is too good for the film.
01/12/2017 James Malone
It's hard to explain but there's just something about some of the chords and tonal shifts of that era that I don't think we quite capture today. I like both the original and the slower versions for different reasons. I do think 5:55 could've been a little faster though

Herrnann was genius! How'd he manage to get such scary, emotive music from just strings???!!! Every Hitchchock film was better if Herrmann was doing the score.

03/12/2017 u.n. owen
Marcus Newbury Not just Hitch, anything he touched. Channel surfed an obscure film noir recently, thought it sounded familiar - sure enough, Hermann. He did sci-fi, fantasy, effects. Unique. Both de Palma & Scorcese used him later from knowing his classic earlier work. Apparently Hermann hated the 1974 Murder on the Orient Express score (which is lovely) because it was too fluffy for a Death Train!

Nothing but the string section... That was Herman's brilliant vision for the soundtrack. Sometimes as they say, less is more and boy, does he prove it.

Responder a este comentario >>

03/12/2017 u.n. owen
rayTay Hitchcock was not going to use music in the scene, Hermann went ahead. When Hitchcock saw the completed scene he changed his mind & bumped up Hermann's name in the credits. Hermann scored The Birds & there is NO MUSIC, just electronic effects. Sadly, a few years later, Hitchcock dropped Herman's score for Torn Curtain, for something more "modern". It ended their relationship.

Herrmann knew how to mike music for soundtracks, too, and I think that's one reason the music sounds so ferocious on the soundtrack. It will never sound the same way in concert, even if the conductor gets the tempo right!

It's called 'digital' music. No matter how perfect the orchestration, in the end, it ends with that person who digitally makes it perfect. I study classical piano, and the nature of the human being is want of perfection in any of the fine arts. That will never happen no matter how many times practiced. You can take one piece of music, dance, et al, and it will never be perfect! Alas! We beings of imperfection. It will come close. Because we listen to music that has been digitalized, it it has made want of perfection worse. Humans will never exceed that unless we are Gods, and most of us know there is one ONE God. I am sure, those that go to a recital to listen to a concert, solo piano, especially the famous person who may be performing, hear a mistake or two throughout the performance, lends to show how human we are, and time only dictates that it's actually good to hear that mistake, and in the end, it's all okay and good, including exceptional. Sometimes, we artists tend to listen to too many CDs, etc., and that can be a downfall because of the record/CD company makes the end result 'perfect.'

Kirsten I. Russell think you’ll find it has nothing to do with orchestra it is the analogue recording system (Westrex) and how it’s mixed !!!! .Herrman conducted the theme in exactly the same way it’s done here only it is now 40 odd years later and sound recording and mixing is done now in digital not analogue also bear in mind the mix pitch is speeded up in the mixing process too !!!!.Its all very well saying the sounds are different in variation but I’d like to see you conduct a 30 odd member orchestra better

Fascinating to see this performed, although the music doesn't sound as fierce and manic as it does on the movie soundtrack, and I've never heard a re-recording that matches the first performance we ever heard--conducted by Bernard Herrmann for the movie soundtrack and never released as an OST. Nevertheless, this performance keeps me riveted!
